My First True Love

Dear Running,

I vividly remember the day I fell in love with you.  I was 9 years old, I remember the exact baggy t-shirt I was wearing and the basketball shorts I was drowning in. I remember the happiness you brought me that day as my dad was pestering me about my form (which I now know was quite good).  Little did I know, you would change the rest of my life and open doors that I never knew were possible.

Like every relationship, we have had our ups and downs.  You showed me what heartbreak feels like.  There have been moments when I never wanted you in my life again-I tried to push you away and block you out.  There have been nights when I fall asleep crying because of you. There have been mornings when I lay in bed and wish that you weren’t bugging me to get out of bed.

Despite our rough patches, you are what I crave every day. When I have a rough day, you can instantly turn it around.  When I am lost or confused, you can clear my mind and help me find purpose.  When I am anxious, you bring peace. The pain and struggle you have put me through has made me a stronger and more confident person.

I love that you challenge me to be a better person every single day.  Whether it is physically, mentally or emotionally, there are daily challenges that you force me to face head on.  You have taught me that the easy way won’t lead to success.  There have been miles where I thought that my body couldn’t make it another step yet you show me that I am capable of more.  You have taught me to always believe in myself.

Through you, I have met some of my closest friends, traveled to amazing places and found a career that doesn’t feel like a job.  You are the reason I can fall asleep so easily at night and the reason I see so many sunrises in the morning.  I couldn’t be more thankful for the confidence and feeling of empowerment you have given me.  You have given me a sense of belonging when I have felt so lost in the past.  You are the reason I chase my dreams and continue to believe.
